You know it’s getting closer to Christmas when …
There’s nowhere to park at Westfield
You find yourself humming to piped recorder music
Your next purchase threatens to exceed the credit limit
Another social function is just one meal too many
You can’t quite locate the magic this year
Christmas is surrounded by so much expectation. We think we should feel a certain way, be touched by the ‘magic’ or moved by the moment. If those feelings don’t come there are certainly plenty of advertisers advising us how to buy the spirit instead!
I suspect that many of those moments that are best in life just ‘happen’, that if we try too hard to create a certain feeling we become too inward looking and focused on how we are responding. If that’s the case, warm and fuzzy feelings at Christmas might best come as a by-product of centring on the meaning of the festival and trying to share that with those we love.
